ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY'S CONFERENCE.

(By Telesrapi,—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, this day.. The annual conference of Acclimatisation Societies opened to-day. The president (Mr. L. Tripp), in his address, said that fishing in New Zealand had been excellent in some parts, particularly at Taupo, and indifferent at others. Fishhad been destroyed at Taupo, and it was a question whether such fish should not have been collected and disposed of. Re-garding-native game, he-said that unless something was done to preserve it, and stop indiscriminate shooting, there would soon be none left. If license fees were imposed, it would, he suggested, be an .addition to the funds of the Societies, which could be used to check tlie ravages of stoats, and weasels. As regarded deer; the hope was expressed that the young deer turned out would supply-fresh blood. In Waiirarapa there was overstocking, and many deformed heads, and arrangements 'had been made with settlers to kill such animals. In Canterbury the herdwere doing well. He .suggested that the time had come when visiting sportsmen should be charged a higher fee than local, sportsmen.

The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. Tripp (Wellington) ; vice-president, Mr Fitzroy (Hawke's Bay); Council, Messrs. Palliser (South Canterbury), Hanan (Southland), Sale (Stratford), Pollard (Marlborough), E. Lowe (Wellington), Goodson (Taranaki), Liffiton (Wanganui), Poyton (Auckland), .Chisholm (Otago), Brown (Otago).Mjc-ore-honse (Canterbury); treasurer, Mr. Ostl.er.

A motion to make April, -lay and June an open season for shooting native game was lost, a majority of the delegates agreeing that the Act was best as it is.
