TE -.WAMU'TU. The second meeting of the newly-formed j Young Men's Institute was held in the Town Hall on Tuesday, July 19th, - the Rev. F. W. Clarke being in the chair. There were ! about 70 young anaa present. Lectures were ; given by Hesscs V. D. Wood and W. if. ! .Stewart, the former giving a character | sketch on the life of ipitt, and the latter I describing 'the life and work of Thomas iCbatterton. The President stated that roor_s were available for the Institute in the Public Library buildings, and volunteers were quickly forthcoming to put these rooms in order. The movement is meeting with the hearty cooperation of all residents, and the institution promises to be one ot the most flourishing and beneficial possessed by the people. C _KrBB-_G_, 1 The Railway Department is losing the | services of Mr. Claude Cook, who has been in the Cambridge office for some time- He has made up his mind to study for Holy Ord—rs, and he goes to enter S_ John's College. A social gathering was held in the gymnasium in connection with the X.M.C-A. on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance of members and their friends. The Misses Trythali, Hay-iuith, Beid, and Carr, Messrs. Fisher, Russell, Reid, and Smith contributed items to the programme, and all appeared to spend a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The local musical society are going ux for Gilbert and Sullivan's "Pinafore," which they hope to stage about the end of October or beginning of November. The attendance keeps up well, and there is every indication that more will come in to take a part in the opera. The South Auckland golf championship is to be decided on the Cambridge links on October the lTth, ISth, and 19th. Hamilton Club has already notiiied that it will be represented by a dozen players, and it is hoped that other clubs will be equally well represented. The " local championship _iat_ies commence on Wednesday, the 3rd of August. WATT?-. A parade of both local volunteer companies was held on Tuesday evening in the Drill | Shed, Lieutenant-Colonel Wolfe inspecting. | Long-service medals were presented by Lieu-Iten-ant-Colonel Wolfe to Major Kenrick and ! Lieutenant Clarke, of the Waihi Rifles. A I trophy in the form of a handsome set of carvers, donated by Mr PH. Wynyard, ! which was won by Corporal Saunders, of '■ No. 3 Ohinemuris, was presented to him iby Colonel Wolfe.

The secretary of the Waihi Miners' Union has been advised that, as no candidate has received a majority vote for the positions of vice-president and secretary of the Federation, another ballot between' the two highest in each case will be necessary.

At a meeting of the Northern Wairoa Rugby Union held last night at Aratapu, it was decided to play the linal cup __ture, which ended in a draw last Saturday, between Dargaville and Arapohue, at Te Kopuru next Saturday.

At the Dargaville Borough Council meet- | Ing on Tuesday evening the Mayor referred to his recent visit to Whangarei, when he | had an opportunity of discussing the question of the ha—ue_sing of the Wairoa Falls wit!_ prominent people of Whangarei. He stated ■that Whangarei people were fully alive to the importance of the project, and were taking an active interest in the matter. Tbe report of an expert engineer had already been obtained, and delegates appointed, to proceed to "Wellington to further the scheme. Co-operation of Hobson Connty an_ the Dargaville Borough had been sought, and he hoped that at the approach- ] ing public meeting all councillors woulds attend. He considered that it would be I wise to appoint a delegate at the public [ meeting to accompany those from Whangarei, and co-operate with them in urging on • the Government' to take proper steps to I utilise the great asset possessed in these j ! falls. Councillors concurred in the ad- | i visability of moving in the matter with as | little delay as possible.

HUNTL-, Wednesday. The Huntly School Committee met on Tuesday evening. A letter was received from the Secretary of the Board of Education re the Committee's application for additions to school, owiug to largely increased attendance. The Board decide! to bold the matter over until they saw how the attendance kept up. Regarding the Committee's application for repairs to fences, etc., the Board are sending up a workman to execute the same. The headmaster's quarterly report showed 314 scholars on the roll and an average attendance of 257.- It was agreed to request the Board of Education to dispose of the teacher's residence and grounds, as being in an unsuitable place. A very successful lantern lecture on "My Travels'in India" was given in the Methodist Church on Tuesday evening by Mr C. W. Harris. The proceeds were in aid of the bazaar to be held on August 5. On Tuesday evening, July ISth, a valedictory social' was tendered to Mr and Mrs R. .T. 'Bollard and family, who, after a residence of ten years in Taupiri. are leaving ,to take up their abode at Tamahere. near Cambridge. Mrs Lovell's Hall was crowded with a large and representattvi attendance. Mr A. H. Waring, on behalf of the residents, presented Mr Bollard with a handsome illustrated address, Mrs Bollard with a ftsh service, and Miss Bollard with a silver tray, the gift of the Sunday School children.
