(Special to the Star.) TBENTHAM, this day*' ' The Parliamentary Handicap was a boll over so far as. the favourites were concerned. California and Sir Frisco were hot selections. California, however, got an execrable start, and was conceding an impossible distance. As soon as the barrier rose, Merrie Zealand was "first away, then followed St. Felix and Penates. California was twenty lengths behind the leaders. Merrie Zealand continued to lead the way all round the back, the Auckland-owned Ngapuka always being one of the rear division. Coming into the straight Bollin moved up, and a great battle ensued up the straight, Bollin winning by a head. Sir Frisco was a clear length away, and eight lengths ahead of California, Which was fourth. The latter had run a great race, though beaten out of a place. Time, 1.52 4-5. The Winter Hurdles proved the best of good things for Paisano, the second favourite, which won as he liked by two lengths. Tauira set out to make the running, and led over the stand hurdle, where Mahuta fell. At' the mile post Palsanb was in front, and, going over the back.l he drew clear of the field, which was then considerably strung out. From this point nothing had a chance with the Gisborne horse, which fenced in faultless style, whereas Tauira, on the other hand, lost ground by running each hurdle. Paritutu ran a very good race.
