MURDERED BY HIS PUPIL.

SCHOOLBOYS WITH EEVOLTEES. A most atrocious crime has brought the school question to a crisis in Italy, and it is the opinion of those competent to judge that a radical change is imperative. Professor Ghelli, of Palermo, was sitting before his desk one day, when he became aware that one of his pupils, a certain Lidonni, was at Ms elbow with his exercise book in his Jiand. The boy, who was about 14, complained that the teacher had not been fair in the number of marks which he had given him, and when Professor Ghelli, with great patience, began to prove that he iad just what he deserved, the youth again repeated his accusation, drew a .revolver, and SHOT HIS MASTER DEAD, immediately afterwarlds committing puV cide. The investigations made have led to the conclusion that Lidonni was one of a number of schoolboys who bad formed themselves iuto a secret society, having as motto, "Pericula villa habemus," for the purpose of forcing their masters to give them good points in their lessons, and incidentally to be as insubordinate and impertinent as circumstances would allow. One of the Professors of Palermo, speaking to a committee of investigation, said: "I speak only because I hope that publicity will provoke a moral reaction. My superiors have always been deaf to my laments, as they believe that THE SCHOOL. MUST ADAPT ITSELF TO THE PUPIIi,

not the pupil to the school. "The magistrate will have to find the l.oy who before the crime pointed a revolver at the back of his master, and was not punished because he said it was a joke. He will have to find who wrote the anonymous letteis to three pupils, alluding to the 'Black Hand'; and so on." This same professor narrated that Signora Ghelli before the crime found oil on the stairs and on her doorstep, ana her servant exclaimed that she must put salt on it, showing that they both coneiderefl that it was a warning to the Professor that his life would be attempted, according to w^t^rofrr^d: the masters have no authority the studSh a boy of degenerate tendenc.es, the results are the above.
