THE RETIRING 'BISHOP.

Bishop NeUgan, who after rather more than seven yeais' work in .the.. Diocese of Auckland, is..laying adown the' office, was born at' Dublin, and is n"dw"sl years of age. His University years were spent at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated BA in 1884, and M.A. in ISB7. In 1886 he was ordained deacon, and priest in the fonowing year.-- After a brief teaching. e^_erance:TLt-ipswich, he became curate of St. Paul's, Sculeoates, in the Diocese -of-York.- He wae curate of Dereham-,-Norfolk, from ISB9 to IS9O, and curate of Christ's Church, Paddington, from IS9O to 1894. In 1894 he was appointed Vicar of the important parish of St. Stephen's, Wesfcbourae Park, and remained there until his departure for New Zealand to take up his appointment as Bishop of Auckland. He came out -to - New - Zealand with very high recommendalions for energy and whole-heartedriess in whatever work or cause he espoused, and as a preacher has always been noted for his powers in oratory, and for his clever reasoning and commonsense discourses, whUe he came out from London with a reputation already wid9 as an administrator. "The Times," in reply to his appointment to the Bishopric of Auckland, said that the lines on which th« parish of St. Stephen's, Westbourne Park, had neen carried on, augured well for the new Bishop's. usefulness in New Zealand. Before coming out here, Dr. Neligan had for "a -long time been assisting in colonial -work in so far as it could be done without leaving England. He was president,of the Diocesan branch of the Society lor the .Promotion of Christian Knowledge, and had induced and helped many men to undertake colonial work. The Bishop, with Mrs. Nehgan and their'fanrily, arrived in Wellington by the Papanui on May 16, 1503, having been unanimously chosen in the previous November by the Synod of the Diocese of "Auckland to succeed the late Bishop Cowie, and was consecrated Bishop, of Auckland, at St. Mary's pro-Cathedral, ParneU, on May 21 following.
