PONSONBY LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETi'. The weekly meeting of the Ponsonby Literary and Debating Society was held in the Lecture Hall, Leys Institute, last Wednesday evening. A motion moved by the president (Professor Walker), •That ladies be admitted as members," was, after a lengthy discussion, carried by five votes to three. Tie remainder of "the evening was devoted to impromptu debates. The (following subjects were discussed:—"That Party Government is a Mischievous System" (affirmative Mr. Bennett, negative Mt. Docwra); "That Capital Punishment Should be Abolished" (affirmative Mr. Phillips, negative Mr. Darby); "That Disarmament is Possible" (affirmative Mr. Stubbs, negative Mr. Stebbing). DOMINION LODGE, 1.0.0. F. : The Loyal Dominion Lodge, 1.0.0. F., met on Tuesday evening, when, the following officers were installed for the ensuing term : Grand Master, Bro. W. A. Gray; Noble Grand, Bro. H. J. S. Gray; Vice-Orand, Bro. W. Barnaby,, elective secretary, Bro F. J. Mollard. The Noble Grand appointed Bro. Cox, H.S.N.G.; Bro. Day, L.S.N.G.; Bro. Kemp, warden. The Vice-GTaml theu appointed Bro. Attfleld R.S.V.G and Bro Hebden LjS.V.G. The Noble Grand, ViceGrand, and elective secretary thanked the members for the honours conferred on them. P.G. Bro. Evans reported attendance at the meeting of the committee appointed for the purpose of endeavouring to set up an Auckland United Friendly Societies' Hospital Conference. This matter is receiving tlie earnest consideration of the committee. Bro. MoHaxd, elective secretary, was declared winner of the prize offered by P.G. Bro. Cleal, at the opening of the lodge, to the member introducing the most new members in twelve months. UNION OF LITE-RAItY iAND DEBATING SOCIETIES. The third round of the Athenaeum Cup debates will take place this evening. The subject lor debate Is: "Tshat Thackeray •was a greater novelist than Dickens." The competing societies, places of meeting, and judges are as follows:— University A v. M.8.0J3. A, at University; Judge, Mr T. U. Wells, M.A. 'Ponsonby v. University B, at Leys Institute; judge, 'Mr J. Drummond, M.A. Y.M.C-4. v. M.8.0j8. B, at V.M.C.A • judge, 'Professor C. W. Egerton, M.A. All the debates are open to the public.
