THE KC>HN SHIEIJXAUCKLAND DEFEATS WELLINGTON. The.first match of the season forfthe Kohn Shield, presented' by the late Mr Adolph Kohn for competition by employees of the various tramway companies throughout tIMJ, Dominion was played at Alexanara Parkyesterday afternoon,' when Auckland defeated Wellington by 8. points to 6, af teiv a fairly even game, in -wiich the visitors had all the.worpt of the luck. Both teams, took the field wearing bands round their snns, as a token of respect to , the late Mr Kohn, the donor of the shield. The attendance was fair, and the weather kept fine until about half--way through the second spells when rain fell, aid continued to the conclusion of the game, making the ball and ground very greasy. ' About 20 minutes before time a Wellington player was ordered off for using insulting language to the referee. The only alteration in the teams as published • was the replacing of Hall at three-quarters by Matthews. Wellington won the toss, and played from the eastern end, having zhc advantage of the strong nor'-easter blowing down the field. McKinnon set the ball rolling for Auckland, Hawkins' return finding the line at the centre. Auckland were jrst to get going, a passing 'run, McGregor to McDonald, being spoilt, by the latter falling to take, and Willis relieved., ■; Wellington gradually worked play down field, an. , ! a passing run threatened the blue and whites, but Small failed to take 83 easy pass, and a chance was lost. A mark by liana for Wellington, and Perkinson had a shot at goal, but the attempt was resultless. Wellington kept up. the attack, and Perkinson had another shot from a free kick, which again was futile, and Auckland forced. The kick ou.t wga badly mulled by Mordarty, and for a moment danger threatened Wellington, but the blacks' forwards came round, and ehifted the scene of play to Auckland's territory, and Munro's kick rebounding off a Wellington forward, Morrison just managed to save in the nick of time, Wellington came back to the attack, and Bramley. after a short dash centred, and things were lively for Auckland, but A. Clark kicked too. hard, and the blue and whites got relief in a force, which tactics they .were compelled "to adopt immediately afterwards. Auckland rallied a bit, and for some time play hung at the centre till Wellington gradually beat them back, A. Clark throwing a-way a chance by hanging on too l° u gAuckland's forwards, headed by Bropoy and MeKiunon, cleared, and, taking the ball down the field, McGregor joined in, ana Aucklnnd were on the attack, a passing run ending in Matthews crossing the line. Webb | converted. (Auckland 5, Wellington, 0.) Shortly after resuming, Auckland v/ei> forced twice in quick succession, the last time by a shot at goal from a penalty by Perkinson. The visitors were making determined efforts to score, and kept up an Incessant attack. At last their efforts were rewarded, a free kick for a breach by JXatthewe resulting in Perkinson sending the ball between the poets. (Auckland 5, Wellington 3.) A spell of fast play followed the kick out, and. Perkinson had another shot at goal which' fell short, and then the blacks attacked solidly, Small throwing away a. chance by hanging on too loug, Keeping up tUe pressnre, Bramley made a nice dash, and then sent it out to the backs, but Hawkins kicked too hard and Auckland forced, a loiig kick by Bowe having a similar result, and the bell rang for half-time shortly after without; any further addition to tbe score. ' T. SECOND SPELL. Brnmley set the sphere in motion Sn the second spcU, the exchange of kicks rtiuliig at Wellington's 23. The blacks quickly cleared a mark by Small, a forward rush, headed by Clark, taking play to Auckland's territory, where it remained for- »<>me time. At this stage a short stoppage was necessitated owing to an injury to Spiers. Ou resuming the blacks set up a hot. attack, but a weak pass by A. Clark gave Auckland a chance to clear, and they removed the scene of danger, a free kick pulling tlieui up. Wellington returned to the attacK, Hawkins losing a chance by kicking instead of going on. Now followed the most exciting bit of play of the match. Wellington were attacking strongly when McGregor intercepted. pass, and, dashing: past Spiers and .Smhll, ran down the fleld, and was ou.tpacing Willis, when the latter made a dive troin behind, and just got the Auckl&nder by the heels, bringing him down, and saving a. certain score. It was a nice bit of Play. Wellington cleared their lines, and, taking play to the centre, the forwards broke.away with a, nice rush, Morrison saying.- For a period play was of an uninteresting character, till Auckland rallied, and the visitors had a turn at defence, getting relief in a force i from a kick at goal by Webb from a mark Iby Matthews, which vvent wide, AuekMud returned to the attack, Kirkwood being prominent in a rush, and Wellington again forced. The blue~and whites' were having.a pit the best of matters, and, the forwards taking charge, M. Brophy picked up, and Shot over- the line, registering Auckland's second try. Webb railed at goal. (Auckland 8, Wellington 3.) Auckland were making determined efforts to add to their, total, but the handling of the ball by the backs was faulty, and several good chances were lost, the fatal mistake being made of trying to pick up in loose rushes. Play was of an uninteresting character till Munro let Wellington in by failing to take a. high kick, and, Spiers following up fast, Wellington vterc on the attack, and, A. Clark marking, Perkinson sent the ball over the bar, making the eqores:—. Auckland ~,.. ..,..,„.,..-. S Wellington ;.-........... 6 From now till rail of time both sides made big efforts to score further, hut the bell rang leaving Auckland the winners by the narrow margin, of two points. I NOTES ON THE GAME. The game was pf a fairly even ■ character, but the visitors, if anything, had a hit the best of it, and were unlucky on one or two occasions. Auckland were a trifle superior Ju forward play, but the visitors' backs were the bo.tter, Perkinson- and A. Clark being the particular stars, while the only one on the Auckland side really up to form was McGregor. The Wellington pack were a very even lot, the winger Bramley putting in a lot of good, work, while, of the Auckland lot, McKinnon and M. Brophy were most conspicuous. After the match the Wellington team were entertained at dinner at the Tiffin by the Auckland Tramways Recreation Club Mr J. J. Walklate presiding.
