Bain and Gordon Smith, in which | Bain undertook to gain two pintails in an hour or forfeit £25, was won by Smith. Bain secured a fall in 16 minutes, but within five minutes of resuming' Smith got 'him on the mat by an overhead throw, and succeeded in gaining a fall. AUDIT OF COMPANY ACCOUNTS. WELLINGTON, this day. : At a meeting of registered accountants, ! held last night, the question as to whether the auditing of public companies' ."accounts should be restricted to publio ! accountants- was discussed. It was resolved that the matter be referred to the general meeting of the New Zealand Society of Accountants. Opinions were generally expressed that there should be no discrimination between members of the society in this connection, and that the public would be better served and just as fully protected by extending the right to every member of the society. MISCELLANEOUS. HASTINGS, this day. Rev. John Hobbs, for twenty years vicar at Hastings, who has resigned owing to declining health, was presented last night with a purse of 300 sovereigns and an illuminated address. Presentations were also made to ilrs. and Miss Hobbs. Mr. Hobbs retires' to Napier in a few months, and then resumes spiritual work. The efficacy of the chemical fire engine was fully demonstrated last night when an outbreak occurred in an old twostorey block of buildings next the Grand Hotel. The fire had burned through from the ground to an upstairs room, but the door and windows were kept closed, and the chemicals quickly extinguished the flames, otherwise the •whole block from the Grand Hotel to the Union Bank corner must have gone, as an asbestos joint blew out in the steamer before it could be got into action.
