HON. C. S. ROLLS KILLED.
BRITAIN'S FOREMOST AVIATOR MACHINE BREAKS IN MID-AIR. FALL OF A HUNDRED FEET. jßy Cable.—Press Association:.—Copyright.) (Received 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, July 12. The Hon. C. S. Rolls, whose many flights in his bi-plane, including his double journey across the Channel last month, place him in the forefront of British aviators, was killed at the Bournemouth Aviation Carnival to-day. He was one of the competitors in the alighting competition, a nd was making a sudden descent when the quick drop caused over-pressure on the back portion of the machine, breaking the pivots. The machine was thus rendered absolutely beyond control, and it fell to earth, a distance of a hundred feet, at a terrific rate, being smashed to a mass of matchwood and broken steel. When Mr. Rolls was extricated from the • ruins of his machine he was found to be quite dead, and an examination showed that his neck was broken and the base of his skull fractured. The accident, which was witnessed by thousands of spectators, caused the abandonment of flying for the day.
