SENIOR GRADE.

UNITED 4 V. PONSONBY O. The game between United and Ponsonby took place on No. 4 ground, Remuera, under •the control of Mr Larking. Prom the Initial bully United attacked, but the game quickly lapsed into a rather uninteresting, long-hit-ting tourney, with intervals of close scrambling play, for which the slippery state of the ground wa3 partly responsible. After about a-quarter of an hour had gone, however, the United forwards livened up, and from a throw-in Parton intercepted, and sent on a bustling rush ending in Martin notching a goal. , United ~ 1 Ponsonby o For the remainder of the spell honours were fairly even, neither aide gaining any noteworthy advantage. The second spell opened with a determined assault on the blue and black goal, but Davis, the Ponsonby custodian, saved nicely, and the ball returned at a merry pace towards United's end. After a hustling bout in the United circle, Willis, (the whites' right wing, secured, and itook it along the line almost to the opposing goal. Ponsoci.y conceded a long corner, and then play gravitated up-fleld again, to return quickly, iiowever, with the United vanguard hot upon it. Torrance got the opportunity after the goalkeeper had saved once, and sent it past him before he could recover himself. United -... 2 Ponsonby , 0 Shortly afterwards, the whites were in scoring form again, and a rush carried the composition almost to the uprights, but Parton's attempt was poor, the shot going wide. A few minutes later, however, Parton's opportunity arrived to retrieve, and he notched. United ..- S Ponsonby —..... ....._•_, 0 United were now pressing continuously, the blue and blacks conceding a number of corners in quick succession. The game by this time was little better than a scramble in tho mud, but United continued to have the advantage, and Barry was the next to find the net, and the game finished a few'minutes later, with the-score:— United 1 4 Ponsonby ......... 0

AUCKLAND -1 V. ST. GEORGE'S 6. On a frightful ground, hardly fit for hockey. Auckland won the toss, and defended the hospital goal. At 3.20 p.m. proceedings commenced by Auckland taking the leather into St. George's 25. A free hit helped to keep up the pressure, and Auckland bombarded the citadel, but GUmour was equal to the occasion. Stone and Adams broke away, and St. George's Invaded the Auckland circle. AUen saved a fast shot by kicking, and Lepine hit to midfleld. A persistent attack, started by Baker, resulted In Auckland drawing first blood. St. George's momentarily got nway from the bully, but Auckland soon had them in their own half. A run down the" line'by Adams was brought to a conclusion by Whitley hitting out in St. George's 25. The cup-holders continued the attack, and, from a scramble iv the shooting zone, Auckland scored again. A sally by the Auckland van was well cleared by Gossett. A moment later Norton did likewise, and Cullen, gaining possession, raced for the circle, but Kavanagh wheeled round and removed the danger, and Auckland attacked, but some some fine centres by Murdoch were not availed of. From a centre by Welham, Norton Intercepted and drove Into Auckland territory, but his forwards lost the opportunity. St. George's were again goal-hunt-ing, and an angry shot by Stone was just stopped by the Auckland backs. St. George's now showed better form, and a fine rally terminated by Tattley sending a fast centre from Adams Into the net. A good bit of play by Walters placed Auckland on, the defensive. The Auckland centre forward Intercepted a pass, and the ball went to Welham to Mather, who notched the third goal. .Immediately afterwards a pass from Mather resulted In Auckland's bully again netting., The red and blacks kept the onslaught going, . and a clinking shot by Mather was brilliantly saved by Gitmour, Tattley and Stone were prominent in shiftlug play into Auckland's circle. Tlmms scored with a heady bit of stick work. This sudden surprise roused Auckland, and a couple of dangerous shots went in • close proximity to the goal posts. A loose rush, and a bad hit by Adams gave St. George's an opportunity without the desired .result, however, as Allen saved, th e spell ending— Auckland 4 St. George's 2 The second spell opened -with a scrambling attack by Auckland, but a free hit brought relict to their opponents. Play simmered back to the half-way flag, and an exchange of hits between Kavanagh and Gilinore placed St. George's on the defensive. Stone and Cullen led an- attack, wthich was. 'temporarily frustrated by Kavanagh. Lepine then sent leather on to Murdoch, who beat all the opposition, but his centre was rather high. St. George's gradually worked play back Into Auckland's territory, and, with only a couple of backs in the way, a score seemed certain, but Adams' centre looked direction, and a 25 resulted. Mather was conspicuous In invading St. George's circle, but iNortou came to the rescue and eased the pressure. Tattley, Cullen and Stone were Instrumental in an onslaught on the Auckland net,-but Allen ran out and spoilt the shot. St. George's still maintained the attack and a fierce assault was stemmed by the Auckland backs, and defence was changed to attack, and the St. George's were fully tested in that department. Cullen broke away, but Baker stopped, and a clever bit of work by Page shifted the danger. Stone and Adams carried play into Auckland's circle, and Tattley put a fast one into the net.' After a brief attack by Auckland, St. George's ploughed their way through and Allen saved a shot from Tattley at a critical moment. St. George's made strenuous eiiorts to score, and a likely goal was well saved by Allen. Auckland made a fine rally, but Gilmour and the remainder of the defeuce was too 60und, and the game ended— Auckland ..._,. 4 St. George's ™_»_„„ 3 Mr. B. Noonan was referee, UNIVERSITY 8 V. GRAFTON O. Playing on No. 5 ground, at Remuera, on a sodden, slippery ground, the wearers of the black and white once again had to bow to defeat to the 'Varsity players, who notched 8 goals. Prune got away from the opening bully, but Speight stopped progress, the ball going out nt the inid-ileld flag. Play hovered about mid-field till a pass from Pierce to Reynolds saw the blues away, and sharp aud fast passing resulted in U. Jacobsen notching 'Varsity's first goal. The Grafton vanguard, through the efforts of Prime and Hamblin, carried play into the blue's circle, but adopting dilatory methods, a capital chance was lost, and Richards sent on to N. Jacobsen, and again 'Varsity were nway. Hosking was a stumbliug block, aud Caro, Prime, and Hamblin again tried to pierce blue's defence. Play was transferred to Grafton's end, and although Mason saved well, at last N. Jncobspu got one in. The play generally was In 'Varsity's favour, and King got one into the net. The play now evened up, and a score seemed imminent, but the scratching methods of Grafton lost the chance. With the rain setting in, but little interest seemed to be shown by Grafton's vanguard, the brant of the work falling on the backs, and in quick succession, N. Jacobsen notched 5 more goals for University, the whistle shortly sounding time, with University winners by 8 goals to nil. Mr Hay was referee.
