« I-lUITG-ROWERS' PROTEST.' (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HASTINGS, this day!" At a meeting of the Fruitgrowers' Association an important discussion followed the reading of Mr. Kirk's letter explaining Dr. Tin-lay's proposal that prison labour be used to plant orchards for lease or sale to approved Orchardists, and. disclaiming any intention on the part of the "Minister to have fruit grown by prisoners" in competition with private enterprise. * - The meeting expressed disapproval, of the proposals, and resolved: "This Association. Wrongly against the •Government planting orchards, and urges that prison labour be utilised for planting trees' to provide timber for commercial requirements.
