BOY SCOUTS.
Last evening the Mayor of Northcote (Mr H. Cadiiess) presented a large'number of first and second-class - certificates to the boys of the Northcote Battalion of Scouts, as the result of a recent examination conducted by Lieut. C. McGilp. Mr Cadness referred to the splendid progress made by the troop under the guidance of Clrief-Scoutniaster H. Stebbing, and .his assistants Scoutmasters A. Sharp, Hatrick, and 3lr A. W. Potter. A paragraph was also read from a London paper quoting the report, and illustrations from .the New Zealand "Graphic," of the opening of the first Scouts' Clubroom, built for the purpose, in the Dominion, at Northcote. Subsequently Lieut. Applegarth, a recent ■arrival in Auckland, who saw much active service with Sir Chas. Warren in Bechuanaland, and also against the Basutos, related several thrilling exploits which greatly interested the boys, and at the conclusion of his lecture appealed to them to embrace the opporr tunities afforded by their training as Scouts to become good citizens, and if need be, good soldiers. A hearty vote of thanks and cheers were accorded to the visitors, and the slnginig of the National - Anthem brought a very interesting gyening to a close;
