CITY COUNCIL.

The usnal meeting of. the Auckland City Council, held last night, was attended by his Worship the Mayor (HriL. J. Bagna'.l), Messrs Tndehope, Casey, Mennie, Tutt, Nerheny, Patterson, Michaels, Thompson, Mackay, Entrican, Smeeton, Parr, Shaw, Knight, Read. LIGAK PLACE-LEVELS. Two complaints from residents were received ■with reference to the proposed permanent level of Ligar-pjace, alleging that, were the present plan carried out to completion, their properties -would suffer On the motion of tne Mayor, it was agreed "That the proposed levels of Bridge-street, Beaumont-street and Ligar-place, as shown in the plans submitted- by the City Engineer, be fixed as .the permanent levels of the said streets/' GRAFTON BRIDGE CONTRACT. The Ferro-Concrete Co. (in liquidation) applied for a ' further progress payment of £8200 from the balance of £9710 due in connection -with Grafton Bridge. The City Engineer reported that the total work done by the Ferro-Cbnerete Co., after additions and deductions had been made, amounted to £33,710 O/9. The amount paid to the company to date was £24,750, leaving a balance due of £8060 0/9. In the event of tlie Council complying with the wishes expressed in the application, lie suggested the whole balance of £S»6O 0/9 should be paid to the company, as the bridge was used by the public before it was taken over. The deposit of £750 could be held by the Council as a cover in case of any minor defects being found in the work between now and the 2Sth October. Mr Entrican said he understood tue company Jiad lost .over £6000 on the contract, and the Council should ferred to the Finance Committee. MARINE PARADE. A petition from ratepayers and residents on Marine Parade, Heme Bay, was received, drawing attention to the unformed and delapidated condition of the parade. It was pointed put, further, that for some years the properties in this street had been rated" up to their full value, yet 'the only real attempt at improvement had been done with money raised by the residents. The parade formed part of a drive in view of the upper reaches of the harbour, and wns much frequented by visitors 'to Auckland. The petition was sent on to the Works Couiraittee. APPROACH TO RAILWAY WHARF. The Auckland Harbour Board notified ■their intention to call lor tenders for the formation of a ■permanent roadway approach, to the Railway wharf,' and stating that the decision 'had been deferred until it was known wh-ether or not 'the Council ■would take over the road in accordance with the plan as approved. It was decided to take the street over df it were in accordance with the law. ■HAR.BOU'R-'STREE'T EXTENSION. ■Mr H. Keary urged the extension of Harbour-street, suggesting the Council should use its Influence with the Gas Company and the Harbour Board with a. view to the settlement of the riparian rights, for until this was done tie work could not be (attempted. The letter' was sent on to the ■Works Committee. MORE LIGHT. Owing to the lighting of Karangaliaperoad with electricity, 13 gas lamps are not wanted, and on the recommendation of the Engineer, the City Council has decided tc remove them to various parts of the elf/, giving more light without extra cost to the city. -
