POPE AND MODERNISM.
GERMAN PROTESTS. VILIFICATION OF PROTESTANTS. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) BERLIN, June 10. Speaking in the Reichstag last night, the Imperial Chancellor (Herr yon Beth-mann-Hollweg) announced that the Minister at the Vatican had been instructed to protest against the Papal Encyclical on the tercentenary of St. Borromeo, and express the hope that means would be found for counteracting its injurious effects. The Government was determined to guard religious peace.
Herr Herold, of the Centre party, and Herr Jazmweski, a Pole, declared that they would not pronounce an opinion on the utterances of tbe supreme head of the Roman Catholic Church. Herr Gyshding, a Radical, said he hoped the Government ■ would be strong enough to secure atonement for the vilification of the Protestant Churches. ROME, June 10. The Osservatore Romano explains that the Encyclical was aimed at modernists, and dealt chiefly with Catholics, who, in St. Borromeo's time, were rebelling against ttie teaching and authority of the Holy See.
