The weather was fine but bitterly cold, and the attendance numbered about 10,000. The home team won the toss, and thereby gained an advantage. The first spell was ■marked by even play. The New South Welshmen frequently invaded the Maoris' territory, but the visitors, though they could not make much headway against ■their opponents, managed to put up a strong defence, Winiata, Tnkarangi, Martin, Kaipara, and .Dansey being the most prominent.

The combination of the New South Welshmen proved superior, and they displayed fine tackling powers. Shortly before tae end of the first hal-f Sellars bad to retire with a broken rib. Immediately afterwards the first score appeared from a fine run by Campbell, and Row secured a try, the spell ending-—New South Wales three points, Maoris nil.

In the second half H. Martin took Sellars's place. Though, the visitors had the ■wind at their hacks they failed- to hold their own, the New South Welshmen's superior condition and -combination telling. The Maoris were kept strictly on the defensive, and perceptibly tired towards the close. Widmer added a couple of tries'for the home team. Howe converted-one, but the shot at goal in the other case failed. The visitors showed an inclination to hang on to the ball too long, and tbere were evidences that they had not yet had time to develop true form.
