CITY EAST BY-ELECTION.
Mi- G. McKnight has been duly nominated to-day as a candidate for the Au<ikland East seat, rendered vacant by the death of Mr X Ba-ume. MrMcKnuglxt states that at a meeting of the Central Committee held on Saturday night, when there were IS present; a motion was put urging upon liis withdrawal, and that motions was carried by 11 to 7. A second motion was that Mi - George Davis should be the Labour party's candidate for City East, whereupon the minority who supported Mr MeKnight retired from the room, and the eleven who remained, carried the motion' in favour of Mr Davis unanimously.
A meeting of the City and Surburban Prohibition League was held last evening in Wesley Hall, at which Mr R. French presided. It Was agreed to hear a ten minutes' address from the various candidates. Messrs MeKuight and Davis accordingly addressed the gathering, also Mr Hill, who announced his inteiition to come out in the Opposition interest. A deputation was also received from supporters of Mr W. Richardson. Sul>sequently selection ttss made by ballot, and jVIr George Itetvds was the accepted candidate of the meeting.
