ROOSEVELT AND EGYPT.

SLBON GOKST'S POMCY. PiNDING A MIDDLE WAY. (By Association.—Copyright.) (Received 9.15 a.m.) LONDON", June 6. The "Manchester Guardian" protests against the Conservative papers falling into Mr. Roosevelt's clumsy pitfall, and their readiness to sacrifice Sir Eldon Gorst, British Consul-General in Egypt, to Mr. Boosevelt's obiter dicta. Sir Eldon Gorst's only offence was trying to find a middle way between the extreme Egyptian Nationalists and those wishing to treat Egypt as a conquered province. The "Saturday Review" recently published a severe criticism of Britain's High Commissioner in Egypt, Sir Eldon Gorst. It says:—"When the Duke of Connaught reached Cairo Sir Eldon Gorst received him in a travelling cap and a rough motoring-dress. It is.true this costume was appropriate to the vehicle which conveyed him to the station, for he came on a motor bicycle. Could anything be more discourteous, on the one side, to the brother of the Sovereign, or more foolish. on ; the other, if we consider the necessity of maintaining some dignity in the eyes of a race which sets so much store on appearances? But this is only one example, a glaring one, of a course of conduct consistently opposed to the usual observances of decent society. It is neither good form nor good policy to attend race meetings in putties and travelling cap, to refrain consistently from attending religious worship, and openly to profess atheism and speak contemptuously of the religion of one's own countrymen. Mere common sense and decent feeling inculcate outward respec-t for the creed of your country when abroad, even in an official occupying a humble position."
