(Received 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The preliminary report on the vital statistics in New South Wales for 1909 shows that the population at the end of last year was >1J04R,44i, nn increase of 40,535; marriages numbered 13,048, or. 8.03 per 1000, the highest record for 22 years; births totalled 43.709, or 26.94 per 1000; and deaths 9.75 per" 1000, the lowest rate on record, and 9 per cent below the mean record of the past ten years.
