LAWN TENNIS.
The arinual match between the Auckland and Taranaki Associations was played last Saturday, and resulted in a com- . fortable win for the Auckland, representatives. The matches were fairly evenly contested thrbughout, but the balance of strength lay with the Auckland rejiresentatives. Unfortunately Dr. __eith was partially incapacitated during his match With : Nicholson, and he. withdrew from the subsequent contests. Dr. Smith played a fine game iv the doubles, being particularly severe in his dverh—id Work. Grigson combined fairly well with the Dr. in the . doubles, and his ' win in the singles — the only win in the men's singleswas a creditable performance. Miss Gray played safely, and : her win with Miss G. Gorrie against Misses Powdrell and Brewster was full of merit. The Tpjranaki team played well throughout, Miss Powdrell being the star performer. The visitors Were the guests of the ' Auckland Association on Sunday, when they had. a very pleasant motor boat excursion on the harbour. < Although the challenge from England 1 in connection with the Davis Cup contest was two days late, the American authorities have agreed to accept the same. In the opinion of the American representatives, who visited Australia, the Americans have in Lame a player of higher standard than Brookes of Victoria. We : have yet to hear of the performance j which entitles Lame to the position his champions claim for him, and in the meantime are satisfied to recognise the - brilliant Victorian left-hinder as the ] finest expdnent of the game at the present time. The question of the adoption of tbe : Ayres ball by the New Zealand Assricia- '. tion has given the impressiOn that thht ■ ball has to be used by other association, and affiliated clubs. This is riot the case. Each Association .may adopt whatever ' make of ball it desires, and "each club can , do likewise (all* things beirig equal). It is always desirable to iiave 'uniformity in matters affecting tennis throughout the Dominion, but at the present time, from the opinions oh the different make, of ball, there is very little prospect ot uniformity. The annual meeting of the Auckland Association will be held shortly. The secretary, Mr. T. R. Grigson, has a very excellent reriort to make, showing a satisfactory financial position, While there has been great activity in tbe game during the closing season. Mr. Holmes, the president of the Association, is leaving, on a visit to the Old Country, this montn. Players are now making arrangements for Easter tournaments. Several players from Auckland are visiting Wanganui, whilst there will be a large numb.-r going to Hamilton.
