EARTHQUAKE AT SAMOA.

A yiOLENT EECPTION. PROBABLT IN THE SOI_O__ONS. The steamer Katanga, which arrived from the Eastern Pacific on Saturday, reports that the Savaai volcano at Samoa has been unusually active of late. A severe earthquake was felt in the group at the end of January. the seismograph in Mulinuu has registered several severe earthquake shocks lately, tin. whole of them being within a few miles of the group. The shocks recorded were on the following dates: 31st December, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14th of January. On Wednesday, the 19th nit., a violent eruption •occurred, which lasted for a space of about 60 minutes. We hear from the Observatorium that the centre of the shock was probably in the Solomons.
