Maher recently paid nearly £9000 for Cropwell Court, a residence near Nottingham. Mr. W. Davles Intends sending Maheno South to contest the Taranaki Cup, and the Soult mare will probably be shipped to-mor. row by the Rarawa. ArtiTlerle Is still having an easy time at Trentbam, and her owner states that she is not likely to sport silk until the autumn racing comes up for decision. Castigllone. by Birkenhead — Corelone. who formerly carried the buff and black jacket of Sir W. R. Russell, is now doing duty between the shafts of a cab at Hastings. The Hotchktss horse Advocate was advertised in eriVr to be sold by auction at Messrs. A. Buckland and Sons' yards yesterday, and will be offered rft the same place next Friday. Bally Shannon has been sold by Mr. E. J. Watt to a Walrarapa sportsman, and the Merrlwee colt has joined T. Ross' team at Tauherenikau, where he will be prepared for future events. The famous English brood made Morganette died- recently iv the Old Country. She was the dam of Galtce More, winner of the Two Thousand, Derby, and St. Leger in 1597, and of Ard Patrick, the Derby winner of 1902. The defeat of Prophet in the Hack Hurdle races at Hawera came as a surprise to who would not hear of his defeat. He was apparently unlucky on both days, a faulty jump at the last fence ruining bis chance on the last day. He was favourite on both occasions. The Launceston Cup resulted in a deadbeat between Drumreagh (Leehol.me—Kosslyn) and Iliad (Maivollo—llium). There were twenty starters and Iliad looked all over a winner until within a few yards of the post, when Drumreagh came with a rush and got level on the post. Each paid a substantial dividend, Iliad especially so. It is rumoured that Gwendolina is a likely competitor for the nest Grand National Hurdles. She has already given some evidence of jumping ability ln private and should do well over hurdles If her owner elects to have her schooled. Federal is another probable candidate for honours In the so-called illegitimate branch of racing, and claims an engagement in the Autumn Hurdles at Wiugatul, In which he has been awarded 10.8. The "Dominion," in its report of the Hawera Cup, says it was a good-conditioned field that contested the Cup, and. in the run down the straight, nothing went better than Milan and Swimming Belt. Sir Prize had a leg, but Bismarck and Astraea looked well. From a good start Astraea was the first to show out, and she led for six furlongs, when her saddle slipped back, and she dropped to the rear. Down the back Tiptoe was galloping under a strong pul! just behind Bismarck and Swimming Belt, and alongside Milan, Sir Prize followed Tiptoe into the straight, and then Milan came on the outside, and just got her head In front in the last few strides. The staying powers of the winner were well tested in this race, and she came through the ordeal with flying colours. Sir Prize pulled up very lame.

In conversation with tfce Hon. E. Mitchelson. President of the Anckland Racing Club, 1 gathered that the club Intend carrying out a number of improvements ot Ellerslie, which should bring the course thoroughly up to date. Arrangements have been made for a supply of water from the Ellerslie Town Board, aud pipes are at last to be laid around the course for the watering of the tracks. A new two-year-old track is to be put down, which is to be perfectly drained, and It is anticipated it wUI be fit to be worked on practically at any timo unless something in the nature of a flood occurs. Further stand accommodation and shelter for the outside public Is to he provided, and a new wall is to be erected where the old stables are at present, which will enable the lawn at the back of the stand to be enlarged. Several other smaller works are also to be done, and It is expected that altogether about £8000 will be expended TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH. (By Telegraph.—Special to Star.) CHRISTCHURCH. this day. A large number of Rlccarton-tralned horses are booked to leave for Dunedin next week. Prim, who Is still being spelled, will not fulfil her engagement In the Dunedin Cup. Satisfactory entries were received on Friday evening for the Groat Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps, the two leading handicap events at the C..1.C. Autumn Meeting. Nearly every centre, with the exception of Auckland, is well represented, and the prospects of a fine meeting look exceptionally bright. Montreal, who has run rather disappointingly of late, is to be treated to a run in the paddocks for three weeks. Love Wisely is again a member of W. Pine's active brigade, while The Cingalee has been put into commission again by T. W. Cotton, juu., who evideutly Intends to make another attempt to get a race out of the dlsappoinlng son of Ben Farley. C. Jenkins, the well-known Porlrua rider, will shortly remove his home to Levin, where he has secured a ulce property from Mr. J. F. McDonald, owner of Gold' Crest, Tairua. and other horses. The two-year-old Susa. who has been sufferlng from knee lameness, has, re joined D. Roberts' active brigade, while Frivolity has resumed active work after a short respite. Giovanni, who bus been enjoying a lengthy rest, has rejoined W. Clarke's active brigade. Diabolo Is getting through some useful work at Porlrua. and the black son of Portulla is expected to be cherry ripe by the time the Wanganui Cup rolls round. Mr. H. L. James says that, calculated on a basis of last season's operations, the new racing tax will draw £753 per annum from the coffers of the Dunedin Jockey Club. Mr. v.". H. E. Wanklyn, Secretary of the C.J.C., says that over £2000 will be the figure drawn from the Riecarton gathering. Sir Geo. Clifford has never won a Dunedin Cup, but be appears to hold a fairly strong hand ln this year's race with Husbandman. Taskmaster, and Kilwinning, and his selection should run well for the blue and gold cbetjuers. Lawn Rose, who was considered unlucky in getting left at the post In the last N.Z. Cup race, is being specially prepared for the Wanganui Cup. C.J.C. NOMINATIONS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRLSTCHURCH, Friday. The following nominations have been received for the C J.C.
