It 'was quite time something permanent was ,-done to the . road, as there "was heavy trauic there.' The TSngtneet reported that this particular road was used only lot- delivering goods' to the premises abutting thereon, but the: trnfiii: was of Bueh a heavy nature that ordinary mneauain seemed to be of little use. He recommended that the- road should be.--paved -with stone setts on a concrete foundation, at an approximate- cost, of £600, ahd'l.fllat.-.the owners of premises abutting the road should be called upon to pay 50 per cent of the cost. —Inferred to. the Streets aud Works Committee. SHELLY BEACH'ROAD. On behalf of tile residents of Shelly Beachroad, .Mr. James Hodgson.wrote asking when this road would be put in proper order, as promised when a deputation of residents .waited .on the Council .some time .ago. The engineer's report stilted that no work of a ■pernifflnent character' could be undertaken In this street until after the close of the financial year, when he would suggest that provision be made on the estimates for the formation of the street. —Referred to the Streets and Works Committee. GREAT NORTH ROAD. • , The Town Clerk of Grey Lynn wrote asking the City Council to forward the sum of £76 as per last assessment in connection with the maintenance of the Great Nortn road. The City Council's Town Clerk (Mr. Wilson) reported that the account was for the amount of a judgment and costs in an action between the Auckland Gas Co. ana the Point Chevalier Road.Board, and raised the question as to whether the Council could legally coutilbute. Under sec. 159 of the M.C. Act of 100S, the Council may tnaks a contribution for the maintenance, repair, widening or otherwise improving a public road outside the city, and the Council should be well satlsiiert that the account In question comes within the scope of such power before passing the same. Mr. Entrlcan moved that the account be passed for payment. The improvement of the Great Xorth-road was one of the best things that, had been done of recent years. Now thnr the road was In good order, the Tramway Conipanv might be asked to extend their lines there. The Government (bad been induced to contribute f 1 for £1. The Mayor suggested the question should be referred to the Finance Committee, and this course was adopted. VICTORIA PARK. . , The head mistress of the Girls' Grammai School wrote that the school had no level piaying ground, and asked for permission lor the pupils to play cricket and tennis in the Victoria Park. The hours asked for were from about 3.15 to i.30. The men, the writer believed, did not use the ground until after this hour, aud the park would not be wanted on Wednesdays- and Saturdays. It was suggested that no fee would be charged a public school like this for the use of the park. The City Engineer (Mr W. E. Bush) reported he could not recommend the use of the park as suggested without the payment of v. tee. seeuijf that ail other persons who use rhe park for games pay the Council for the privilege of so doing. . ' Referred to the Works Committee. ENCROACHMENT. A letter was received from Messrs Pullen and Dawson, stating that a large portioa of a public street (Durham-lane) has been for many years, and is now being, used oy a private individual (.S. Cochrane ana Son) for the purposes of no auction mart, and asking that steps be taken to have the piece of road referred to restored to the '■ citizens. The Finance Committee Tecommended that as the existing building has stood In' its present position for many years, without objection from adjoining property owners, or detriment to the public, it be allowed,to remain during the pleasure of the Council, provided the owner pays rent at -the rate of £25 per annum for the use of the portion of the street occupied. LOAN PROPOSALS. Carter wrote complaining that the smoke from the Albert brewery constituted a nuisance, tilling h-ls cental rooms with smoke. Referred to the Works- Committee. ' ■-•.-■-., A resident of Hopetoun-street wrote that complaints had been made again- anu again with regard to the disagreeable odour rising from the vucuut land, used by the Council aud others as a pit for rubbish, it was time the Council prevented any rubbish but earth being deposited there. The engineer reported Unit the tip is fenced in, and supposed to be locked every night. Only street sweepings were deposited in the pit. Referred to the Streets Committee. 'Mr Mackay presented a petition from residents of Richmond-street, asking the Council to consider the formation of rhe permanent levels of this street, as the present level was anything but satlstfaetory. Referred to the Streets Committee. For the formation of Lome-street, the tender of W. Casey (£698 14/3) was accepted. J. Hill (£lofl) was the successful tenderer for renovation of a house In Wyn-yard-s-treet. The Electric Committee reported that owing to delay in delivery of. some of the material, the lighting of Karangahnperoad will not be complete until about 10th March. The report was received.' In reply to the Ponsonby Ladles' Swimming Club, asking that gas .be laid on to rhe dressing shed, Shelly Beach, the Works Committee recommended that a reply be sent that the matter will be considered Id time for next season. In connection with the recent incident at ■Shelly Beach, In which, the caretaker .of, the Shelly Beach bathing shed wrote asking favourable consideration in the matter of the £12 10/ received by him from Mr M. Anderson, an-d which he had to make good through paying out to the wrong person, the w-orks Committee recommended that the Council pay half the amount, and that the caretaker be Instructed in future not to taka any responsibility for valuables. The Leys Institute Committee reported •that the folio-wing donations were received during December and January: College's Almanac and Diary; Dacre,- "Cruise New Zealand"; J. P. Grossmann, "Evils of Deforestation"; T. W. Leys, 93 vols, general literature and Action; X.Z. Government, N.Z. Official Tear Boole. It was decided that the donors be thanked. . ,
