After rising upwards of 31ft at Port Royal dcs Champes, the Seine gradually fell 16in. Fourteen fishing boats, each with a crew of fishermen engaged at the owners' expense, were engaged in the rescue work during the floods. Bluejackets, clergy, and nuns were also busy afloat. While nobody is in actual peril, the distress affects a-quarter of a million people. The newspapers agree in praising the coolness, fortitude, and good humour of the people of Paris, which-was beyond all praise. Rescuers caught a pillager and hanged him summarily on the Pont dTvry. The police released him only just in time to save his life. CLEARING UP THE DAMAGE. TOUCHING INCIDENT. CHILD SWEPT AWAY IN A —"** CRADLE. (Received 8.45 a.m.) PARIS, January 31. After two days cf fine weather, with a sharp frost, the* Seine is falling steadily. Each section of the city is placed under a board of architects, engineers, and sanitary experts, and disinfectant depots are being established. Motor and other shallow boats are being sent from England by train and steamer to assist in the rescue work. Municipal water carts are doling out pails of rfesh water as though it were milk. M. Briand is arranging for securing special supplies of petroleum. The Archbishop of Paris held a service of penitence, and declared that the floods were a call to repentance. The salon of the Louvre, containing the valuable collection of casts, is flooded. Notre Dame Cathedral is not seriously A child in its cradle was swept away by the floods, and the parents who wit- ' nessed the little one's awful fate were I helpless to rescue it.
THE BELIEF FUNDS.
PARIS, January 31. The national subscription now totals £70.000. King Victor Emmanuel has given £2000. The United States have given £10,000 through their Chambers of Commerce, and Boston has given £10,000. The Kaiser telegraphed to President Fallieres his warmest sympathy. The Turkish Parliament has voted £2000 to the relief funds. BRISBANE, January 31. The Queensland Government has cablde £500 for the relief of sufferers by the Paris floods.
