THE COAL STRIKE.
STATE SHOULD OWN MINES. (Received 10.10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Mr. Watt, the State Treasurer, says the coal strike has taught Victoria the lesson that the ownership of such a vital source of power as coal should not pass into the hands of private individuals exclusively. Any Government in the future would be destitute of judgment and im- I agination if it allowed what was under the soil to pass exclusively to those who ! secured the land by purchase or accident. MUCH NEEDED SUPPLIES. (Received 10.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Eleven thousand tons of foreign coal reached Sydney yesterday, and a similar quantity arrived at Melbourne. The South Australian Government is sorely in need of coal. The N.S. Wales Government will probably help if it is possible. __^____^^______
