AVIATION.
(To the Editer.) Sir, —In other lands the subject of aviation is attracting immense interest and attention, and why should it not do so here as well? Some time ago there was a mild scare on, when some persons saw, or thought they saw, a flying machine hovering over New Zealand; but what sort of scare would be produced if such a machine were really about in the possession of an enemy bent on mischief? U'hat possible defence would we have against such an enemy? Absolutely none. It could just float over towns, etc., and destroy whatever it liked without the slightest chance of retaliation on our part. New Zealanders have distinguished themselves in many branches of science and sport, and possess, I have not the slightest doubt, among them inventors able to hold their own with the ■world's best, if they only had the encouragement to come out; but unfortunately, it is the hard and cruel lot of many inventors to be cursed with insufficient means to carry out their ideas, and those are the men that should be given some financial help. W r e spend thousands every year on other branches of sport, and why could not a sum of money be subscribed for such a magnificent object as that of aviation?—l am, WAKE UP NEW ZEALAND.
