EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association )
WELLINGTON, this day.
The school syllabus came under review of the Educational Institute- Conference to-day. Mr. McKenzie (Auckland) said the teachers of his district felt-that the syllabus was too indefinite and gave too much power to inspectors, who were apt to bully some of the younger teachers in smaller schools. This allegation was deprecated by Mr. Valentine (South Canterbury). Ultimately a committee was appointed to draw up a report on the syllab"- A motion was carried that an exten.su..; of the school day beyond five hours is inexpedient.
The Conference carried motions that inspectors should be under the control of the Education Department, that the age of exemption be 15, and not 14, and that the standard of exemption be the sixth standard.
