CAPTAIN NEWTON'S REPORT.
VESSEL'S PERILOUS POSITION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. Captain Newton wires to the headquarters of the Union Steam Ship Co. that the s.s. Waikare struck at noon yesterday, and was beached on Stop Island. Siie landed her passengers and crew all well. The steamer's stem is on the island, and there are 11 fathoms of water under the stern. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. The Waikare is in a perilous position. It is feared her back will break. From the meagre information supplied it is quite clear that the damage is serious. The steamer was beached in remarkably quick time. This was necessary owing to the depth of water in the immediate vicinity. The Waikare was making her fourteenth trip to the Sounds, and this was the first occasion on which she had met any mishap. The Moura left Port Chalmers at 5.20 this morning, and arrives at Bluff to-night. It is expected she will meet H.M.S. Pioneer returning from Dusky Bay. If necessary, the Moura will proceed to the Waikare's assistance. The tug Terawhiti, with, salvage equipment, under control of Captain Daniels, the company's salvage expert, will be ready to leave Wellington to-night, if this is found necessary.
The Rosamond arrived at the Bluff this morning, having passed Puysegur Point in the night without being intercepted. As the Pioneer has proceeded to the scene the Rosamond will not go. The Waikare is badly damaged.
