ISLAND MURDERS.
A PUNITIVE EXPEDITION.
SITO'S GANG CAPTURED,
(Received 9.25 a.m.)
BRISBANE, this day.
Mr. Woodford, Commissioner of the Solomon Islands, recently proceeded to Bagga to inquire into the massacre of Binskin's family by Sito's gang in October.
A force of 200 native police, under white officers, landed and scoured the island without success. Difficulty was experienced in securing the co-operation of local coastal natives, and the Commissioner announced his intention to remove all neutral natives to another island unless they co-operated. Several natives, believed to be in communication with Sito, were detained, and finally others decided to help the Government. The island was thoroughly searched for three weeks, resulting in the capture of Tongava, the actual murderer of Mrs. Binskin and her younger child, and the death of three others of Tongava's family. In addition sixteen prisoners were taken and several of Sito's party were killed while resisting capture. Sito is reported to have been captured in a neighbouring island.
