The wicket was faster than yesterday, but was etill tricky. Six thousand were present. Trumper, in the fifth over, attempting to pull Vincett, lost his middle stump. He batted 55 minutes for 31 runs. Six for 79. The batsmen were repeatedly beaten by the bowlers. A slow yorker was fatal to Hopkins when he had scored 4. Seven for 91. Carkeek was neatly caught at mid-on a run later, off Keif. The fielding was brilliant. '" Armstrong and O'Connor were partj rered, and the former, who had shown skilful cricket for 80 minutes, was bowled at 20. The ninth wicket fell at 112. O'Connor hit up 20 in 40 minutes, including three fourers, then the wicketkeeper snapped him. The innings lasting 136 minutes, for a similar number of runs. R. Relf and Vine opened the county'i second innings. The former was missed at 5 by Armstrong in the slips, off Noble. After lunch Relf increased his score by vigorous driving. Noble bowling Vine with the score at 39. The wicket was now less treacherous, and Relf and Young put up a bright partnership. Relf gave a hard chance to Noble at point, off Wliitty, when 34, and Armstrong, with a fine ball, broke the partnership, dismissing Young. Two for 80. Frequent changes were tried in the bowling, and Relf skied one t 0 Gregory in Armstrong's second over. He was at the wickets 05 minutes, and hit six fourers. Three for 83. Armstrong got Killick in the same over without the total being altered. Heygate and A. E. Relf then got together, but the former only added a single. Five for 01. The century wns'reached in 130 minutes, and a run later A. E. Relf wa3 out lbw. Since the resumption, the Victorian bowler had sent down seven overe for seven runs and four wickets. Without any further score O'Connor bowled Cartwright. Many extras were added, the ball beating both batsmen and wicketkeeper. Eight wickets were down for 112, and Smith, by free cricket, lifted the total before being stumped to nine for 146. The innings closed for 15S, made in three hours. TABBANT BEATS GLOUCESTER, i (Received 9.40 a.m.) 1 LONDON, August 27. E. G. Hayes has completed 2000 runs, the first to perform the feat this season. Middlesex scored 145 ngainst Gloucester's 33 and 81. Tarrant, who scored 55, carried his bat through the innings, and took seven wickets for 18 and six for 49, j including the hat trick.
