DRURY SUBURBAN TRAINS.
lj" CITY COUNCIL'S SUPPORT. The oft-raised of the Drury tra n service came before the Auckland City Council last night, when Mr. R. Tv iehope moved a resolution to the effi ct that the Council should enter its pretest with the Minister for Railways agxinst the discontinuance of the Drury suburban train service. Mr. Tudehope said it was desirable that the service should be continued, since they now had the direct service through to Wellington, and the growth of the suburban areas was likely to go ahead by leaps and bounds. Mr. Patterson: There is any amount of municipal -work we can devote our time to; there is no need for us to interfere in political matters. Mr. Entrican; This is not a political matter. Mr. Patterson: I think it is, and it is not our place to interfere. Mr. Xerheny: I also think we have no right to go into the question. The Minister says the Drury suburban service will not pay. Why should we back up a monopoly—a monopoly of land grabbers? Mr. Nerheny went on to say That he hoped they would not allow themselves to be made a catspaw to drag at the Government. The Drury people wanted to feather their own nests at the expense of the people. Matters such as these would not have his cohesion. He was not going to do anything to benefit land grabbers at the expense of others. Mr. Entrican said they were not there as the' representatives of land grabbers, but as representatives of Auckland city. He did not know of any land grabbers at Drury. Further than that, he would say iwithout hesitation that it was their duty to see that the railway communication within the suburban area should be looked after. Auckland had not been as watchful as the Southern cities in demanding the same facilities for connecting the suburban areas with the city as they had in other parts of the Dominion. The Mayor, Mr. C. D. Grey, also strongly supported the proposal, and said that the Mount Albert service was an indication of how the suburban service could be built up. j The motion was carried.
