Rain delayed the start, but when play commenced the weather was brightening and the wicket was in good order. Rickman won the toss and decided to bnt first, opening with Wright and Morton, the two South Australians, Whitty and O'Connor, leading the attack. Three runs came off the first over, and then O'Connor's first ball was fatal to Wright, who hit it up into tho slips, where Truraper brought off a smart catch. One for 3.

Cadman came next, and attempted to take an off break from O'Connor on his pads. The break was bigger than he anticipated, however, and the ball curling round his legs shifted the leg stump. The score was still 3, O'Connor taking two wickets for no runs.

A fine catch by Carter, who was fielding at third man, disposed of Chapman, the fieldsman taking the ball at the second attempt. Three for 17.

Morton came next, nnd ran into his total at 18. he put up a skier from double figures before a swervef from O'Connor lifted his leg stump out of the ground, the fourth wicket falling at 45. Without addition to the score, Whitty captured Sale, who had made 15. Five for 45. A blustering wind was causing the ball to swing a lot, and the batsmen were all in trouble. A swerving ball from O'Connor beat Needham before he had got going, and the sixth wicket was down for 46. One run later O'Connor, running in, took a return from Oliver, the seventh wicket falling at 47. O'Connor had now secured six wickets for 12 runs. '>ut the rot was temporarily stayed by Warren and Humphries, who played the best partnership of the day, and took the score to 102 before Warren, after a good display, sent a soft one back to O'Connor. Eight for 102. Eight runs later Macartney, running back at raid-off. disposed of Rickman with a remarkable right-handed catch. Nine for 110. Humphries was then taken easily by Macartney at mid-off, the innincs endinn at 116. The Australians made a bad start. McAlister opened with a single, but in attempting another short one was run out.
