MANAWATU GORGE BRIDGE.
OPENED BY THE GOVERNOR. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTOX KORTH, Wednesday. There was beautiful weather to-day for the important ceremony of opening the lower Manawatu Gorge bridge by his Excellency the Governor. The contract price was f 18,000. His Excellency cut the ribbon, and declared the bridge open, in the presence of many hundreds of settlers and representatives of all the surrounding local bodies. Addressing the gathering, his Excellency said that while the attention of New Zealanders was directed to tne larger question of Imperial defence and its own share in its own defence and defence of the Empire, this process, so rapidly going on, of properly roading, properly railing, and properly bridging the country, was a most important part of the work of making the way for settlement, and settlement was one of the first essentials of defence.
Lord Plunket, referring to the historic gorge, said the road would now have to be cleared of slips at a cost of £1200 for its four miles. He hoped that stringent regulations would be made to govern through motor traffic, both in the interest of other traffic and motorists themselves.
