During the running of the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie yesterday, Irish, one of the contestants, struck the first fence, the sod -wall, heavily turning a complete somersault, and tailing over on his rider, McKinnon. The unfortunate jockey was at once conveyed to the casualty room, on the course, where he was examined by Drs. Murphy and Goldstein, who ordered his removal to the hospital. So serious was his condition on arrival at that institution, that an urgent operation had to be performed late last night. On inquiry this afternoon we learn that McKinnon ie in a very critical state, but is progressing as favourably as possible under the circumstances.
