The much-discussed question of the cruelty of pigeon-shooting matches was brought up on Tueeday night at the meeting of the committee of the Christ-church Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The matter (says the "Press") arose through the acting-inspector (Mr. A. Wenetrupp) stating that he had received a letter drawing attention to the fact that many of the pigeons used during the recent competitions of a country gun club had been found suffering great torture, and in a dying condition. It was pointed out by one of the members present that in the vicinity of Auckland practically nothing but inanimate pigeons were used, and he thought this method should bo adopted in Christchurch. A lady member etated that some time ago, during the progress of a pigeonsliooting match, residents in the locality had informed her that many wounded pigeons had been found lying about, and an "awful description of the sufferings endured by the birds" had oeen given. Another member pointed out that the matter had been before Parliament time and time again, and after further discussion it was decided that nothing could be done, at any rate, for the present.
