LONDON, June 8. The Imperial Press Conference to-day-discussed the question of the Tress and ; the Navy, the discusion being entitled ! "The Press and Imperial Defence —the j A Navy." Thi3 is the first half of the dis- j f cussion, which will be continued to-rnor- S J row, when the relations of the Press and i - the Army will be discussed. Mr. Reginald McKenna ( First Lord of j the Admiralty), who presided, urged the j> placing of the navy above party, making ' it an Imperial question in the sense of 1 partnership in a navy common to all. ' Sir Edward Grey (Foreign Secretary) J discussed the functions of the Press, j Criticism, he held, should not be partisan. ] Newspapers in war time should show | patriotism by silence upon many things j they knew. ' Lord Cromer urged stricter control of the vernacular Press. ! Mr. F. W. Ward, editor of the -'SydneyDaily Telegraph," made a notable speech. ' Other speakers were Messrs. Alfred Lyttelton, H. A.
