The Westland Licensing Committee met to-day, v.nd granted practically aIJ licenses with extension to 11 p.m. In one case, where the applicant formerly held a license in Hokitika, and now sought to obtain a license for a different house recently purchased, the chairman declined to give him the necessary certificate of competency, and refused the application for a. new license to be dealt with by the committee. FinaJJy, the application was adjourned until the end of the month. DRINKING IN LYTTELTON. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) LYTTELTON, this day. At the Licensing Committee annual meeting Sergeant Ryan reported that there had been a marked increase in drinking in LyHelton during the past six months, and it is quite evident that licensees were not exercising the caution they should or had previously exercised. The Magistrate (Mr. Bishop) said it was a curious fact that the increase fitted with the date of the last local option poll, before which the licensees obeyed the letter of the law. He urged them, to exercise more supervision. Mr. Hoban, on behalf of the trade, said there had been a great increase in shipping during the six months. The publicans had decided not to apply for the extension of the license to 11 o'clock. Mr. Bishop said the Committee would not have granted the extension if asked. Mr. Hoban answered that the decision came from the licensees' own motion, and they should get the credit.
