ROAD BOARDS.

FORTHCOMING CONTESTS. The annual meetings of the road boards are in most instances over, and the annual elections are now coming on. In many of the road districts; commendable interest is being taken. EDEN TERRACE. A poll for the election of three members to the iEden Terrace Road Board is to be held on Wednesday nixt. The following have been nominated:—'Messrs. James Ulysses Browne, Henry Clayton, jun.j George Alexander Coles, Hubfert Ambrose Good, Henry Richard Moor, and Percy McElwain.

MOUNT -_I_3__RT. Three members are required for Mount Albert, and fbiir are nominated. The candidates are: —Messrs. Thomas Benjamin Clay, Michael John Coyle, Charles "Watson, Harris, and James Matthew Stanton. A poll is being taken to-day. AVO_?i>A-__. In the Avondale district there are eight candidates for three vacancies. The nominees are:—Messrs. Arthur John Morrish, George John Pengelly, Alexander Service, Thomas Henry Spargo, William John Tate, Frederick Walker, Arthur Herbert White, and John Woodcock. A poll i_ to be taken next Wednesday. , REJfUERA. For three seats in the Remuera body Messrs. Alfred Bevins, Eriii Bond, Henry Charles Choyce, James Samuel Dickson, Arthur George Pilkington, and Percy Spencer have been nominated; consequently an election is necessary, and this has been fixed for Thursday next. J-ANGERE. T&ere are four candidates for the three Mangere vacancies, as follows: —Messrs. Albert Henwbbd, Matthew Bruce, John Sommerville Montgomerie, and James Watt Whyte. An election will take place on Wednesday next. T-_M__J_l WEST. Messrs. S. C. CauUon, D. Taylor, and J. Wright are retiring from the Tamaki West Road Board, and an election to fill the vacancies is being held to-day. EAST TAMAKi. Three members are required to completely fill the Beats on tbe East Tamaki Board, consequent on the retirement of Messrs. W. Baverstock, J. C. Bryant, and T. Elli-ori. There is to he ah election on Wednesday riex.. PAKURANGA. From the FakUranga Road Board Messrs. E. Fitzpatrick, T. R. Gill, and W. H. Thomas have retired. If it is necessary, an election will "be held on Monday.

MOUNT ALBERT ROAD DISTRICT. RATEPATERS' MEETING. The annual meeting of ratepayers in the Mount Albert Road District was held at St. Luke's Schoolroom, New North-road, last night. Mr M, J. Coyle presided, and other members of the Board present were: Messrs T. B. Clay, F. J. H. ElUsdon, J. R. Walters ana J-in-s. M. Stanton. Annua] Report:,—The annual report was as follows:—The general rates collected amounted to £I_SO, being atl Increase of £91 oyer last year. The Government subsidy received was _332. Last year the total grant ed to road., boards in Eden County was , limited to f2500,. so that the proportion was considerably reduced thereby. Miscellaneous receipts amounted to £155. About £lli I was contributed by various property owners towards cost of certain works Lighting I for the previous year snowed a "balance of | £101 2/5. but the greater part of this was owing to the Gas Company for lighting. The deficiency on this year's operations was nearly £60, and the rate struck had been I quite inadequate. The expenditure on roads and footpaths was £2500. The revenue from water amounted to £1153, and the expenditure was £1583, and the loss on the year amounted to £300. The consumption per head had been excessive, pointing to wanton waste on the part of many consumers. A deputation from the Board interviewed the Hon. Geo. Fowlds and Dr. Beattie with reference to the Board taking over the sole control of the Mental Hospital springs. A basis of agreement had been arrived at, nnd there was every prospect of a satisfactory arrangement being made in the near future. On special rates there remained to the credit of the various sinking funds the following.—Water loans, £9.6; drainage loans, £109; and main road loads, £3.7, out of which it had been arranged to pay some £700 for the redemption of debentures. The progress of the district during the pas; year had been most marked. Upwards of I 150 hew buildings had been erected, arid the capital ratable value of the district had thereby been increased by approximately £57,000. I

The report was adopted. It was decifled, on rh_ motion of Mr G. E. Hutchinson, to recommend the Board to take legal steps to increase the number of Its members. On the motion of Mr J. W. Shackelford a resolution was passed nrging the Government to lift letters in time for the first delivery in the city in the morning, ana have an afternoon delivery mad. in the district.

Mr. Moss thought that there was something, radically wrong wi-th the administration of the Costtey Home, for the cost during recent years showed a great increase. The chairman (Mr. C. Bagley) said the BOatd ihad decided to investigate the question of the amount of the hospital and charitable aid contributions. The time had come -when such a step was vltaily necessary.
