A PARNELL ROBBERY.
THIEF'S GOOD HAUL.
Judging by a majority of the cases of burglary which have occurred in the City during the past month or two, the light fingered gentry of Auckland appear to have been pretty well won over to the more up-to-date and . business like method of breaking and entering by means of hammers- or rocks, in preference to the time-honoured jemmy and wedge. Quite a number of these impudent cases have occurred since Christmas, and another, equal in all respects for cool effrontery, was perpetrated in Parnell at an early hour this morning. Mr. F. Pickford, watchmaker and jeweller, of Manukau-road, was awakened about three o'clock by the barking of bis dog. He paid no attention at first, but was a minute later startled by the crash of glass below. He hurried downstairs to find that a large irregular gash, some nine inches- across, had been wrought in the plateglass window. There was no sign of the late visitor, and the street was to all appearances deserted. To effect the robbery the thief had carefully removed a couple of large ringscrews in the window sill, to which the large iron birdcage screens across the window, -were fastened. He had then removed the screen, smashed in the window with some instrument like a hammer, and withdrawn several watches and other jewellery to the value of between £20 and £30. One vratch was valued at £14.
The matter is in the hands of the police.
