MOUNT EDEN.

The regular meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council was held last uight. Those present were the Mayor (Mr O. Nicholson) and Messrs C. «J. Tuuks, E. Yates, S. G. Burns, W. Woolley, 11. Crudse, W. Warnock, B. R. Ross, E. H. I'otter, 3. P. Hooton, T. S. Jacka. and C. Hudson.

Borough Wages.—lt was agreed, on the motion of Crs. Ross aud Bnrua, to refer the question of wages paid to Borough workmen to the Finance Committee for' consideration. Finances.—The treasurer's report for T .he period ending December 14th showed that the district fund was in debit £357 3/4. The pass book showed £390 IS/11, less £33 15/7 paid that afternoon. The No. 2 loan account was in credit £286 15/3. I'omidkeeper.—Twenty-seven applications were received for the position of poundkeeper. On the motion of the Mayor, it was agreed to defer consideration of the matter until it was ascertained if the applicants were agreeable to certain conditions which had been overlooked. Mays aud Gordon's Contract.—The Mayor said a conference had taken place with Messrs Mays and Gordon, regarding their claim for certain works within the Borough, but nothing had been agreed upon, and the position was still unsettled. A letter from Mays and Gordon was read, asking payment of the balance due for work done. Cr. Hudson considered that the Council had no option but to settle the claims, In view of the engineer's report. Cr. Potter moved "That the contract money be paid, together with the extras and deposit." The bridge was portion of the contract, and the whole had been passed by their engineer. No seconder was forthcoming for Cr. Potter's motion, and on the motion of Cr. Hudson, it wus agreed to pay for the two main works, leaving out extras and additional works. It was also ngreed on the motion of the Mayor, that Mays and Gordon's claim be not paid for the additional worlcs, but that they be paid a fair and reasonable price for such work, any difference to be settled by arbitration, the Council appointing ouc arbitrator, and the contractors the other.
