OBITUARY.
« MR. HERBERT ARSOLD. In t-ne oartuary column taos evening appears the announcement of the death of Mr. Henry Arnold, manager of the Costiej Institute, Richmond-road. Although only 40 years of age, Mi. Arnold bad seen a Jot of service for the British Empire. He joined the Queen's Bays, and as a lancer saw service under General Kitchener in Egypt, naving an ugly scar as a memento of an encounter with a Dervish. Mt. Arnold subsequently served in India, and had the honour ■of being instructor to the daughters of Earl Roberts while at Simla. Upon his return to England, Mr. Arnold wae appointed drill instructor under the New iioirth Wales Government, and when the Roer war broke out, as a regifient was being raised in Sydney to go to the Cape, he got permission to accompany it. He served with distinction, was the holder of a medal with five clasps, and also received two distinguished service medals. About lour years ago Mr. Arnold was appointed a manager of the Costley Training Institute, and the choice of the trustees was fully justified, as the manager, both by personal influence and also by good discipline, had wonderful command over the lads, who naturally looked up to one who had 6«en so much service in the field. Mr. Arnold introduced the lancers' drill into the institution, in which the lads have become very expert. He was also keenly interested in their gymnastic training, and in every way proved an ideal manager. Mr. Arnold, was a married man, but had no family. About a month ago lie began to show serious signs of Bright's disease, and, on the advice of the medical man, was removed to Ra wlingstcroe nursing home. He, however, only remained there a few days, and at his own request was takft-i back to lii.s home in an Ashford libber. Death took place this morning. Information of the sad occurrence was at once telephoned to the trustees of the institute, with the Tesult that Major Morrow, Mr. C. Hudson, and Mr. C. J. Tunics promptly proceeded to the institute, amd a telegram was also dispatched to the Hon. Geo. Fowlds, who is chairman of the trustees. The interment will take place to-morrow at Purewa Cemetery, the cortege being timed to leave the institute at 2 pjn. Major Morrow lias arranged that the veterans shall fallow as far as the top of Symonds-street, and it is most likely that the deceased will be accorded a military funeral.
