(Before Mr Justice Edwards.) YESTERDAY. IHE AtHENIG- STEWARDS. The trial of the three Athenic stewards—Alfred Jenkins, Frank Fox, and Frank Stephen Blackwood, on the charge of assaulting an old man named Adolplius Kyngdon, so as to cause hint actual j badiiy harm. sva,s continued yesterday* I afternoon, Mr J. R. Lundon defending. j Mr Lundon addressed tne jury, and one lof the men. in the box, declared that (the whole matter was accidental and vras occasioned through the swaying of the" three owing to the behaviour oi the manin the centre. After being away for two hours, the jury returned a \-erdict of gmlty, with. a strong recommendation to mercy, and the prisoners were remanded till next Wednesday for sentence. - ■ DISCHAKGET>. George Arthur Wilson, aa elderly'".man of reputable appearance, appeared this I morning to answer three charges of hay- ! ing committed in June and July last" indecent assaults "on boys Scotia-place, Wynyard pier, and a. tramcar being the I alleged localities. The Hon. J. A. Tole, I K.C. conducted fer the peosecution,!Mr J. K. Eeed defending. j Evidence was given by the boys upon j whom it was alleged the offences had been committed;; wfifle other evidence I which the prosecution desired to call, I bearing on the hypothesis of eyetem on the part of the pnsoier,- was disallowed. Mr Reed called no evidence for the defence, but addressed the jury. • The judge, in summing up, agreed with Mr Tole tha-t the class of offence alleged was of an order calculated to undermine the morality of young boys, and when an offender was caught, he should therefore receive no. considerai tion.- But it was necessity, first, to catch "the offender, and then to proye beyond any reasonable doubt, that hewas guilty. In the present: case there could be no doubt that strong suspicion must be directed towards the prisoner respecting his practices with these boys. But it was necessary before conviction i could be recorded that ffiere must be ! something more than suspicion to go I upon. He commented upon the con- ! flicting nature of certain of the boys* ! evidence, and expressed the opinion that lit would be unsafe, desirable as it was Ito protect young people and society generally from the evil influences of. loathsome practices, to' record a conviction unless they were satisfied that the charges had been proved beyond reasonable doubt. The jury, after a brief retirement, returned a verdict of not guilty. " "Well, prisoner." remarked the judge in discharging Wilson, "I think that the jury are right in their verdict. But I should strongly advise you to be. more prudent in your relations with little boys for the future than ydu have been in the past."'
