THE CODLIN MOTH.

Clo the Editor.) Sir >— J beg to draw your attention to the law now iv force for the eradication ol the codlin moth. This law compels every one who grows fruit to spray or bondage their trees, and the commercial orcUardists are complying with this law to the best of their ability, but there are scores of orchards, both large and small, which are not sprayed, and no attempt made whatsoever to keep down pests. Now, this teems most unjust on il.ose who are trying to keep their orchards clean, for it is obvious that if your neighbour evades the law, your time i< simply wasted in trying to fight these pests, when perhaps a feu- chains away there is a neglected orchard which breeds tile codlin by the thousand. I know of an orchard of 20 acres, not many miles from mine, that has neither been sprayed or bandaged for many years'past." If any of the Government inspectors care to go by rail up the Kaipara line, they can see from the windows of the train many such orchards such as I speak about. In conclusion, I would like to say one word in re.-peet to bandaging. Some people evade the law by putting on a bandage which is left on—(as I know from experience)—perhaps until th c.next season, never having been once removed during this time. I trust that the Department will take action in this matter, as the fruit ha-s already set and the moth has deposited its eggs; therefore if anything is to be done it should be done at once. —I am, etc., PROGRESS.
