A letter has reached the Mayor (Mr. A. M. Myers) from Dr. F. W. King, of " Middlesex," Wellesley-street, Auckland, who states that he has in his possession three water "colours painted, in. 1873, by an old identity—Mr. Alfred Sharpe—who was both deaf and dumb. The pictures represent viewsjjf Waiwera, Taupiri and Mercer, as they appeared at that date, and should be of more than ordinary interest to Aucklandters, and on. this account Dr. King, on behalf of Zfrs. King and himself, wished to donate them to the Auckland Art Gallery, on condition that they remain, if possible in the original frames, bearing the names of the douors, and that the fact that they were painted by a mute be recorded thereon. The pictures will be placed in the windows of Mr. Bouker'e chemist's shop for Fleet Week. Some time during Friday the residence of Mr Reuben Kerry, Richardson-road, Mt. Albert, was visited while the occupants were out, and about £8 worth of jewellery removed, the apparent way of entrance being the scullery window. The following is the state of His Majesty's Prison at Auckland, for the week; ending August 1:—On remand, 10 males;! awaiting trial, 22 males; penal sevitude, life, 1 male; hard labour, 190 males, 22 females; default of bail, 2 males; received during the week, 22 males, 1 female; discharged, 31 males, 9 femalesji total in prison, 225 males, 22 females. On Friday afternoon % at the Auckland Survey Office Lieutenant-Colonel Morrow, who is retiring on a pension from: the civil service, was presented by the staffs of the Lands and Survey Departments with a large tripod camera, of first-class finish, and suitably inscribed for the occasion. The presentation was made by Mr J. Strauchon, Commissioner, of Crown Lands, who referred in eulogistic terms to the work of Colonel Morrow in the Government service, and to his relations with the rest of the staff. Colonel Morrow joined the Provincial Government service in 1861, and held the position of chief draughtsman in Auckland at the conclusion of the native war. He was transferred to the General Government service in 187 G. He received his first commission in 1866, and took part in the Maori war, being awarded the New Zealand War Medal. All over the city and suburbs flags were flying yesterday, the owners evidently being determined to give the bunting an airing. On several poles in private houses it wp.s noticeable that the lads evidently had not studied the law of nations, for in some instances the Stars and Stripes floated proudly over the Union Jack, while in other cases the position had boon reversed. It is just as well to remember that, under no circumstances, should the flag of one nation be placed underneath that of another. Further Reductions! The Colossal Sale has overwhelmed all previous records, and will continue to do so till August 22nd.—John Court, Ltd. (two shops), Queen-street.—(Ad.) "Welcome * prices at the Colossal Sale of drapery, clothing, and' millinery.— John Court, Ltd. (two shops), Queenstreet.—(Ad.)
