SWIMMING THE CHANNEL.
WOLFFE'S EIGHTH FAXLTJKS. LONDON, July 24. Tho cightli attempt made by the v.-011-known swimmer, J. WolJTe, to cross tho Channel ban ended in failure, although a distance considerably in excess of that between Calais and Dover ■was covered. This, in a direct line, is 21 miles, but it was impossible for the swimmer to take a direct course, owing to the influences of wind and tide. After he had swum 30 miles the tide compelled Wolffe to give up. He was then quite close to the French coast. . I
