DEER-STALKING IN NEW ZEALAND.

The growing importance of New Zea land as a deer country was emphasise*, ia a remit brought before the A*j*__m_.tisation Societies' conferenc to-day by Mr. Cox, delegat. from Ashburton. He urged that a recom zneudation should be made to the Com missioner of Crowri Lands that a clausi should be inserted in all future leases o hill country runs where deer are givei light of entry to such lands to dub license deer stalkers. Deer had becomt to plentilui now that every opportunity jhould be given to sportsmen of freely in iuiging in deer shooting. Some owner; ibjected to the presence of deer stalker: in their places. A warm discussion ensued. The president (Mr. L. O. H. Tripp) de dared the proposal most serious. If i. were embodied in a measure of lawpeople would take good care that dcci Were killed on their estates. Certain dis -tricts had been distinctly set apart foi deer, and from these the Government de ,rived a considerable revenue. It wouk be far too much to ask for the insertior of such a clause in every lease, giving everyone a right to go on privati grounds. He remembered a commeni made by a friend when a similar proposa ■was made in regard to fishing. "If thai is the case," said the owner of the banks "there will be no fish iv my stream." After further comment the motion wa; Jest by a considerable majority.
