"BE JUST BEFORE YOU ABE GENEROUS."
(To the Editor.) Sir, —I have waited in vain for someone to raise a protest against the Devonport. Borough Council giving £85 _o- ! wards entertaining tbe fleet. For our ' financially broken-backed borough, it is j some_ring monstrous for the Mayor and I Council]ore to do such a thing Here we are up to our neck in debt, and up to our knees in mud. Some oi our streets have never had an inch of metal on, and j I don't think one street in the borough jis properly kerbed and channelled, and a number of streets are to be brought to j : a permanent level at an early date. ATI j l this meams money. Besides this, we have j i ratepayers who hay* to put bricks a_d-j j boards down on a so-called footpath because of tbe disgusting state.. And [ j when you ask for a load of ash, the cry is: "We can't afford to do anything to i that street yet." W hat we want here is I a Ratepayers' Association, and so keep l a watch on the ratepayers' interests.—l | am. etc, " RATEPAYER.
