FEDERAL DEFENCE.

DIFFICOXTrES OF THE SCHEME. CABEFTJI, DELIBERATION. NECESSARY. (Received 8.4 a.m.) LONDON, July 15. Mr. Reginald McKenna, First Lord of the Admiralty, has informed Mr. W. Redmond, M.P., that Earl Crewe, Secretary of State for the Colonies, has given Mr. Deakin to understand that his scheme of defence presents considerable difficulties from the standpoint of naval administration. Mr. McKenna reiterated his statement |of Monday of the need for careful dej liberation of the Commonwealth proposals. He promised Mr. Austen Chamj berlain, if possible, to lay on the table tbe j papers referring *o the matter.

THE EXISTING AGREEMENT.

j I COSTS MORE THAN ITS WORTH (Received 10.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Mr. Deakin, referring to Mr. McKenna's j statement with reference to the AustraI lian naval defence scheme that the Admiralty was content with the present ar- [ rangement, says that this must refer I only to the currency of the present agreement, and not to any period after its expiry. If a proposal were made for a renewal of the agreement as it stands he ! was sure the Admiralty would want to say a good deal. He knew that some of tbe advisers of the Admiralty were anxious to terminate the agreement, as the cost was more than it was worth.
