FRUIT AT THE WINTER SHOW
A BENEFICIAL INSTITUTION , . : MORE LOCAL EXHIBITS DESEEED. Mr. Boucher, Government pomologist, who has been attending the winter shows in Dunedin. Ashburton, and Palmerston North, in charge of the Government ex-! hibit, -when interviewed by a "Star" re- j presentative to-day, said that the collec- J tion was practically identical with the collection sent to "the Koyal Horticultural Society's Show in London, which there secured the gold medal in open [ competition. j The collection was very much admired j by visitors to the three shows, which j were all exceedingly well attended by | the general public. ""There is no doubt." I said Mr. Boucher, "that such exhibits tend to induce development in the fruit industry by allowing an opportunity for j visitors to become acquainted with the j best varieties for extensive planting for J commercial purposes. They also give an : opportunity to those interested of con-1 suiting the officers of the Department \ with regard to the fruit industry in j general, and the best means to be adopt- j, ed for the control of orchard pests." i Mr. Boucher would have liked to have \ seen more extensive exhibits by fruit growers of the various districts surrounding the centres where the shows were held. He thinks it probable that the department's exhibit will be an in-1 : ducement to local growers to stage more j J extensive collections at future shows. ( =
