CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
THE "CAPPING" CEREMONY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCTIURCH, Friday. The annual capping ceremony was held in Canterbury College Hall this afternoon. There was a large attendance of students, and the proceedings were jovial and hearty from the beginning. The Hon. C. C. Bowen. vice-chancellor of the University, presided, and in the course of his address sketched the origin and growth of the university system in New Zealand.
Air. J. W. Joynt, registrar of the University of Xew Zealand, announced the list of graduates for the year. He congratulated Canterbury College and the students on the very substantial results of last year's work so far as illustrated by the degree examinations. The list showea that during the year the college had produced the following: —M.A., S; M.Sc., 1; Bachelor of Electric Engineering, 1; Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, 1; B.Sc, 1: LL.B., 5; 8.A., 16. In addition to this, Canterbury College had done exceedingly well in that particular competition which was open to all New Zealand, namely, senior scholarships given in connection with the B.A. examination. Only eight of these scholarships were awarded, and of that number Canterbury College secured four. The speaker referred to the errors made in cabling the results of examinations, and stated that there was nothing so distressing or painful as to have to reverse on fuller information obtained by letters, favourable inlormation sent by cable. This had occurred in connection with two candidates in other parts of Xew Zealand, and he had expressed to them his feelings on the subject.
