SUBJUGATION OF UNIONISM.
IGNORING THE ARBITRATION ACT.
(Received 9.40 a-m.)
SYDNEY, this day. The report of the sub-committee of the Labour Council, replying to the Premier's criticism of its action in advising the unions to ignore the Industrial Disputes Act, declares that the Council will not deviate from its intention to oppose a measure aiming at the subjugation of trade unionism, the enslavement of its members, and the surrender of longcherished principles. The Council's objections to the bill , are: That from a careful analysis of the provisions of the bill, it was glaringly apparent that the measure had been ingeniously devised in response to the insidious pressure exerted by opponents of trades-unionism. That members of the legal profession would still be afforded an opportunity of appearing in industrial matters. That an Appeal Court, comprising a judge—sitting alone -where he may so decide—and possessing enormous powers, had been established for the purpose of varying or annulling decisions of the board. That the books of employers relating to profits were immune I from inspection. That security from a union for the performance of an award might be exacted. That the union was made responsible for breaches committed by members. That employers had full freedom to give preference to non-union-ists, but members of unions were debarred the exercise of their right as to whom they would work with.
